My "Street Style"
Guitar Method
I grew up on Chicago's South Side, in the
area that comprised the former Hyde
Park Township where many musicians lived that greatly
influenced American music and also The Beatles,
The Rolling Stones and many others from around
the world. Chicago is home of the blues, jazz,
house music and other types of music. Like many
Chicago musicians, I didn't have any guitar
lessons, so I developed my own guitar playing
method that is different from what is taught in
most music schools. I call my method "Street
Style" because almost everything I learned
was by myself or by jamming with friends and
other musicians. And what I really learned there
was to play music from the heart and soul, and
not to pay too much attention to being correct.
I am an Indie Artist*.
My eclectic music style is based on the blues,
jazz, soul, folk, country and rock music. I was
greatly influenced by the music that I was
exposed to since childhood in Chicago. My
recordings have a live, rugged garage band (or
living room) quality that may require a more or
less sensitive audience. That is because the
recordings were often made in my kitchen or
living room with a lot of improvised guitar solos
and other kinds of stuff. I like imperfectly
scored modern music such as by old Blues or Jazz
Masters, The Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan as
opposed to perfect down to the last nanosecond
electronic music with some exceptions such as
Prodigy, Chemical Brothers or Beck.
I have always experienced stage-fright and never
liked the invasion of privacy that follows
stardom. So, I am not too much into being in the
spotlight. The first acting role I ever had was
in a school play in 1960s. I didn't start writing
music until I was about fifteen. The first time I
played my own music in public was at my school's
Coffee House when I was about sixteen. I've been
told that I sounded a bit like Dylan, which I
took as a complement because I am a great fan of
Bob Dylan.
Through the years I've continued playing and
writing music with some shorter and longer breaks
depending on the situation I was in. There were
also a couple of times when I had to sell all my
instruments and equipment just to get by. So,
things did get quite rough along the way. But all
things considered I am happy to be able to
continue playing and writing music. I like long
guitar solos and when I write lyrics they tend to
be as short as my poetry is.
Below are some songs and instrumentals I recorded
at home on my PC for this website. There are also
some pieces made from old cassette tapes that
were used as background sounds on earlier
versions of this site. Many of the recordings are
song ideas and may be sometimes out of timing.
But in spite of that, I hope you'll enjoy at
least a few of them. BTW, I have written many
more songs then I was able to show here. The
problem is with writing lyrics for them or
finding a partner that would write them for me.
Music In My Genes
If
you are looking for a good musician, I ain't the
one. There are plenty of musicians that have
finished music schools and had proper training. I
write and play music because the music is in my
soul, it is one of the abstract ways I express
myself. So, I've been described by some as an
American virtuoso guitarist and a cross genre
songwriter.
Believe it or not, my Grandfather was a
professional musician. He played violin and piano
with European orchestras mostly in Bremen,
Germany
and on Transatlantic passenger ships. I am also
related to Jan
Kiepura
- a famous Tenor and 1930s European movie star on
my Father's side of the family. His Hungarian
wife - Marta
Eggerth
was also a world famous Soprano and actress. She
stared in two Judy Garland movies For
Me and my Gal and Presenting Lily
Mars. Both of them co-starred on Broadway in
The Merry Widow over 100 times, and
around the world in four different languages over
2000 times. Also, my Father used to own a movie
theater in 1930s. So, I grew up in a kind of a
music and show business environment. But I was
not educated in music. In fact, my family tried
to keep me away from music and show business
because they knew how difficult they were to do
for a living. And I have to agree with them. So I've
never really tried too hard to be noticed or make
a career out of it, and made music mostly for
family and friends.
PEACE!
