City Lights was a San
Francisco bookstore founded in 1953 by poet Lawrence
Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin as the
first all-paperback bookstore in America, if not
in the world. In 1955, Ferlinghetti launched a
publishing house that published Allan Ginsberg's Howl in 1956. The second
printing of that small collection of Ginsberg's
poetry was printed in England and shipped to San
Francisco. A portion of that printing was seized
by customs under the charge of obscenity. After
that, Ferlinghetti and the bookstore manager
Shigeyoshi Murao were arrested for publishing and
distributing obscenity. City Lights Bookstore won
that court case; thus setting a precedent for
publications by many other writers. "Howl" is a 2010
American experimental film about Allen
Ginsberg and the 1957
obscenity trial. More info. Wikipedia
